Bavaria in 2 days, the castles and the roof of GermanyLudwig II's three castles fit into one day because they're all in the same corner, between Füssen and Ettal: Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau share a car park and Linderhof is forty minutes away. Day two goes up the Zugspitze, at 2,962 m the highest point in the country. Neuschwanstein tickets sell out: book weeks ahead.2 days· 4 stops
Bavaria in four days, the castlesThe south, based near the Alps: Ludwig II's three palaces, Germany's highest summit and the Königssee, where the boatman cuts the engine and plays a trumpet at the rock face for the echo. Book Neuschwanstein as soon as you have dates.4 days· 6 stops
Bavaria in a week, castles and citiesThe southern castles plus the four northern cities, which are a different trip: Rothenburg entire within its wall, Bamberg with its town hall on an island, Nuremberg with what is not pretty but has to be seen, and Regensburg, the largest German medieval city that was never bombed.7 days· 10 stops

Nuremberg💡The Bayern-Ticket pays for itself the moment there are two of you
A one-day ticket for every regional train in Bavaria, plus metro, tram and city bus. Up to five people can share it and each extra person costs far less than the first, so in a group it becomes almost absurdly cheap. It is not valid on long-distance trains, and Monday to Friday it does not start until nine.
💡The castles run on timed entry and do not accept lateness
Neuschwanstein, Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee are all guided visits with an assigned slot. At Neuschwanstein, if you are more than fifteen minutes late you lose the ticket, and there is a thirty- to forty-minute walk up from the ticket centre. Book online and build that climb into your timing: that is where people come unstuck.
