Cáceres in 1 dayThe whole monumental town, which fits into one walk: the Plaza Mayor, the Arco de la Estrella, the towers, the co-cathedral and the alleys of palaces. It is one of the best-preserved medieval quarters in Europe, without a single visible cable, which is why so much is filmed here.1 day· 6 stops
Cáceres in 2 daysThe monumental town at a calm pace on day one and Trujillo on day two, forty-five minutes away, with one of the finest main squares in Spain. Both are conquistador towns and they make more sense together than apart.2 days· 8 stops
Cáceres and its province in 4 daysThe city, Trujillo, and the two things that justify coming this far: Monfragüe, with the largest black vulture colony in the world flying at eye level, and the monastery of Guadalupe. If the trip falls between late March and mid-April, the Jerte valley is in blossom and that reorders everything.4 days· 11 stops

Palace of the Golfines de Abajo💡You eat very well here, and cheaply
Torta del Casar cheese, acorn-fed ibérico ham from Montánchez, migas, and a starred fine-dining scene that still costs half what Madrid does. Book if you have a particular place in mind: the city is small and the good ones fill up.
💡The old town at night is half the trip
There are no modern streetlights and no cables: the lighting is warm and low, and after ten there is hardly anyone left. Walking the same streets at night is nothing like walking them by day, and it costs nothing.
💡In July and August it goes past forty degrees
Extremadura in summer is genuinely hard, and the old town is stone and uphill. March to May and October to November are best. If you go in summer, do the old town first thing or at night when it is lit, which is when it looks best anyway.
