Everything is built of Villamayor sandstone, which starts the day almost white and ends it golden. The last hour of sun in the Plaza Mayor and from the Roman bridge is when you really understand why they call it the golden city.
💡From October to May it is another city
Thirty thousand students in a city of a hundred and forty thousand: in term time it has a pulse that August does not. If you want atmosphere, go in spring; if you want the stones with nobody in front of them, go in July and start early.
💡Find the frog yourself
It is on the University façade, on a skull, on the right-hand side. Everyone will point it out and everyone will sell you a keyring of it. Hold out five minutes looking before someone shows you: it is half the fun of the place.
