Parador de Santiago · Hostal dos Reis Católicos💡It will rain, and the plan has to allow for it
It rains about 140 days a year in Santiago and it gives no warning. A waterproof beats an umbrella — there is wind — and shoes with grip, because the wet granite slabs of the old town genuinely slip. With that, the rain rather suits the city.
💡Eat where you cannot see the cathedral
Terraces with a view of the Obradoiro charge for the view. Down at the Mercado de Abastos, around San Pedro or in the streets behind the Alameda you get real seafood and octopus for half. And the set lunch in Galicia is still an absurd amount of food.
💡The pilgrims' mass and the botafumeiro
Mass is at 12:00 and 19:30 and fills up half an hour before. The botafumeiro does NOT fly every day: only on major feast days or when a group pays for it, and those days are announced on the cathedral website. Check it before you build a morning around it.
